The Greek Fathers Adrian Fortescue 9781165102730 Books

I like this book a lot. It was quite informative and, to some extent, it broaden my faith. I purchased this book for my Kindle and the only complaint I have for this edition are some spelling and grammatical errors. Other than that, I give it five stars.

The Greek Fathers Adrian Fortescue 9781165102730 Books Reviews

Another great book by a great man.
As ever when approaching one of Adrian Fortescue's works, prepare yourself for a treat. For in these pages we will travel extensively throughout the ancient Christian East, from Alexandria to Caesarea, from Constantinople to Jerusalem, to Alexandria again and thence to Damascus, "the real eternal city" in Fortescue's estimation.

We will be introduced as if in person to the great Greek Fathers of the fourth, fifth and eighth centuries of the Church's history to the great Father of the Christological debates, St Athanasius; to St Basil, "one of the greatest of that younger generation of Catholic bishops who carried on the fight that Athanasius had fought and finally stamped out the Arian heresy." We will meet St Basil's dear friend, St Gregory Nazianzen, "the patron saint of people who do not want to be bishops," and St John Chrysostom, the "great model and patron of preachers." There are also two Saints Cyril to encounter the first, of Jerusalem, who spent sixteen of the thirty five years of his episcopate in banishment, and the second, of Alexandria, the champion of the Mother of God against the Nestorian Heresy. Finally we will meet the eighth century St John of Damascus, the first of the Christian Aristotelians who lived his entire life under Muslim rule.

Through Fortescue's introductions we will learn Catholic theology by reliving the gritty events in which it was originally hammered out. We will see its champions suffer and at times take questionable paths. Yet we will also witness their fortitude and perseverance and glimpse in their struggles a tangible sanctity from which any age - not least our own - can learn very much indeed.

When at length we have travelled the East with Fortescue these Fathers will no longer be mere figures of early church history. Yes, we shall have enjoyed Fortescue's style and yes, we shall have grown in wisdom and knowledge from his erudition. But we shall also have gained some new friends, the great Fathers of the early Eastern Church, to whom in this life, as we strive faithfully to live and hand on the faith that was theirs, we can turn in the communion of saints for the benefit of their example and the assistance of their intercession, especially on their liturgical feasts, and with whom we hope to enjoy the next.
My review is in no wise a review of Adrian Fortescue's work, but should be read as a "product review."

That said, make sure that you are purchasing the correct text. This scan is worthless and of no use to me. "General Books LLC" did not even try to make this text useful. I thought something was amiss when I saw the low price, but after clicking "look inside" on the product page, I was led to believe that my copy would look like what you see. It does not. Fortescue's use of Greek words is not even attempted (bottom of the 3rd column on p. 2 instead of Ἡ ἀνακομιδὴ τοῦ λειψάνου Ἀθανασίου τοῦ μεγάλου. κατάλυσις οἴνου καὶ ἐλαίου., I see "H avuKo/j.iS'l Tov Xetijsavov Adavaarion Ton /uteyaXov. KaTaXixris oivov Kcu eXaton." This sort of nonsense is on just about every single page throughout (the book is about the Greek Fathers for crying out loud). The footnotes in Fortescue's original text interrupt the paragraphs everywhere, and so the reader is left to figure out what is footnote and what is body paragraph. The index refers to nonexistent page numbers. There are no section headings, nothing. Just three columns of tightly packed text on 75 pages. How would I even cite this? I am giving my copy away. Inquire with the bookseller before you make a purchase. If it is the gray text with the flowers on the front, it is the scan by General Books, and it is of extremely poor quality. If you want the text on the cheap, with enough effort you can probably figure out the flow of things, and so purchase at your own risk.

Buyer beware. Inquire closely before purchasing.
Written from the turn of the 20th century, some of the comments are a bit dated, but the historical perspective and the modern edits to update commentary made it both eminently readable and worthwhile.
