How does a 21-yeard old rookie off a Minnesota farm figure out how to hit big league pitching in New York when he is trying to woo chorus girl Eveleen Sullivan? Harder still when you find yourself becoming the guardian angel for the mysterious Charlie Faust who believes apple pie gives him pitching strength, even though he never pitches. Based on a true story about the 1911 New York Giants and the influence of Charlie Faust, featuring Bat Masterson, Damon Runyon, George M. Cohan, and the New York Giants of 1911. More than baseball fiction, it is a satire on fame and celebrity, and a coming of age story-sort of- as it turns on it's head on the final page. And it's all true, except for the made-up parts. The baseball stuff is all true.

Terry Nelson gives us a fun tale in this piece of historical fiction. Prominent characters in the story are the New York Giants, including the manager John McGraw, star Christy Matthewson, and a majority of the Giant's team. The major competitors of the Giants also feature in the story, including the Chicago Cubs. The most interesting character on the team is Charles Faust. Normally the word "character" would indicate that the person is fictional, but in this case, Charles is most definitively real and most definitively a character. The main truly fictional character is Chet, who is a young bench player on the Giants. Chet is a witness to the 1911 baseball season as it unfolds, and it is through his words that the reader experiences the story.Nelson's story is a light, fast-paced read. The events of the season are described accurately. Although the dialogue between the characters is fictional, for the most part it is as one would expect the characters to interact with each other. It is not a story to be taken too seriously, but it does provide sufficient plot twists to keep one intrigued. There are several punctuation and grammatical errors, but they are not severe enough to detract from the story.
For further information on the real life of Charles Faust, one should consider reading Victory Faust: The Rube that Saved McGraw's Giants by Gabriel Scheckter. A more serious novel of historical fiction is The Celebrant by Eric Rolfe Greenberg. The Celebrant is also based upon the New York Giants of the same era as Loonies in the Dugout, but is an exceptional work and is a must read for those that have enjoyed Nelson's work and want to experience more of the genre.

Loonies in the Dugout Loonies Series Book 1 edition by Terry Nelson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Slow read, strange but okay.
The story follows the Giants through a season of baseball as a backdrop; in the foreground we follow the main characters Charlie and Chet. We see the world through the eyes of Chet. Charlie is a hapless character who is strung along, teased and generally used as a stooge. His addiction to apple pie is a recurring theme throughout the Ebook. Chet is, himself, a bit part player in the team and is rightly placed just above the bat-boy in the ranking system.
Essentially, this is the story of young people with a lot of time on their hands and few, if any, responsibilities. Based in the great metropolis, they clearly have a large number of opportunities to find diversions and this is what they do. This is part slapstick, part satire and a little bit of inspection of fame and the exploits of sports stars, and the vagaries of sports writers.
Like any sport themed book, there is a plot that is captivating to sports lovers. For some reason we simply have to know what happens next; we need to know that they win in the end, or that they go down in "Cool Runnings" glory. Beyond this there are some interesting characters and some farcical situations. I enjoyed the silliness and I learned quite a lot about baseball. It does not need to be taken too seriously and if read in that spirit is an amusing diversion.
