"The Flaws that Bind" is aptly named. The central character in this memoir/novel, Jacqueline ("Jac"), carries a core defect within. This flaw allows-even encourages-her submission to the male sexual and psychological abuse which began with her own father.The novel is well paced, artfully written. Alex, Jac's first husband, encourages her participation in "open marriage" activities. Although apparent distaste for such swapping alienates her, she rather effortlessly glides into the arms of David, a light-skinned Jamaican whom she meets casually.
In the beginning David presents a fresh option: intelligent, ambitious, humorous, spirited. Jac leaves Alex and heads to Jamaica with David. Their relationship gradually deteriorates. David, harboring the idea that his "invention" will save the world, becomes increasingly psychotic-and increasingly abusive. He does not restrict beatings to Jac, but to one of their children as well.
Escaping from her emotional confinement on several occasions, Jac nonetheless repeatedly returns to a life of abuse. It is difficult to understand how a woman as intelligent and educated as Jac would deliberately endure prolonged mistreatment. Flaws thus reminds the reader of two sometimes elusive truths. First, we know our victims. Second, there is none so blind as she who will not see.
Jac travels a fractured odyssey on the path to liberation. We are left with a strong sense of empathy for her. I await author Rebecca Leo's sequel.

I know the author, so it was interesting
The insight this book provides is invaluable to men who often hear other men telling tales of how they discipline their wives and children. It gives them the other side of the story so they can, perhaps, enlighten their fellowman on what they are really doing. The knowledge that they are not acting out of love but out of a need to dominate and feel superior may change their life for the better. If they change it will certainly benefit their family members.
Rebecca's book The Flaws That Bind is a story of how a women gets seduced and trapped at the same time. Yes it is about domestic violence, child abuse both emotional and physical, sexual abuse but way more as Leo is a great story teller. The book is entertaining and gripping I couldn't put it down. You just want to know what happens next and how someone gets into a situation like this. It is clear that the author is a bright, well educated woman which makes the "normal person" wonder how she got herself into this situation. Scary as makes one realize it could happen to anyone given a scenario of events that line up just so with you in the middle. I am really looking forward to the sequel as it is clear the author was once a victim but now a survivor.
As hard as it was to see the women in the book suffer so much pain , I couldn't put it down. I was glad that she was able to over come her fears and take control of her life. This would be a good book for those who suffer abuse of any kind. It shows strength , will to survive, and determination to make a life better for oneself no matter how hard it may be and over come in the end.
Rebecca Leo's compelling autobiographical novel "The Flaws That Bind" quickly takes you into the world of a too-trusting but well-educated, Midwestern woman who finds herself involved with an attractive, but severely flawed, Jamaican inventor, David. Leo paints the tropical island that is his homeland with colorful detail that brings both Ocho Rios and its unique environs to life. Her love for that part of the world and its people is obvious. The main character, Jac, is as attracted to the settings where the story plays out as she is to the smart but controlling husband who fathers her children. Leo adeptly describes the incidents of domestic violence that make her feel trapped, and you can feel the anguish Jac experienced trying to find a way out of a dangerous situation for her and her children. I felt as jerked around by David's many sudden changes of life as Jac must have felt as she tried to keep their family intact.
I look forward to the sequel to this book because the reader is definitely left wondering about the effect of all the incidents described on the children involved. Though the ending impression is that the violence will not happen again, the pattern of submissiveness throughout seems so strong, I wondered if it really could be completely broken.
A captivating read, Rebecca knows how to let an intense story unfold. While I know about domestic violence from reading (fortunately), this is the first time that I understood the emotions, thinking, and choices of one in that situation. The story was told gently, honestly, and quite skillfully. For me, it brought up compassion. For a survivor of domestic violence, I think it'll bring up some very strong emotions, for healing. I'm going to look for other books by Rebecca Leo. She is a fine writer.
Reading Rebecca Leo's THE FLAWS THAT BIND is to confront the joys and terrors that torment the protagonist in this novel. Torn between the promises of a new life in a distant country, the exciting passion of new love, and the cruelty and fear of domestic violence, this woman reveals the truths of a battered woman's mind and motivations. For what does a woman do when she is trapped in a life that offers no acceptable alternatives, no viable choices, no family that will protect her and her children from the isolation and rejection that imprison and immobilize abused women and children, and no apparent hope for freedom from this hell? Leo shows us, through her own fictionalized experiences, that intelligence, courage, and personal growth can create a new life. Leo's story--intense and beautifully written--is unforgettable, and her novel has left me with enormous admiration for both the author and her writing.
